These plates are made from ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMW). It is self-lubricating in similar ways to Teflon, up to 15 times more abrasion resistant than carbon steel, and it won't warp or bend under impact. It is the same material used for artificial joints, bullet resistant armor plating, and the bottoms of skis and snowboards.
