What is it?
The ATTRAXX Oil Filter is a paperless filter that uses rare earth magnets to filter out oil contaminants. These magnets are installed inside a stainless steel encased magnetic rod with a radial field for optimized magnetic field strength. This increases filtering area and carrying capacity.

How does it work?
The ATTRAXX Oil Filter captures magnetic AND non-magnetic (non-ferrous) particles in 2 ways: Static Adhesion and Entrapment.
 
Static Adhesion (Static Charge) happens when oil is pumped through an engine - the ATTRAXX Oil Filter attracts the statically charged particle.
 
Entrapment occurs when an iron or other magnetic (ferrous) particle embeds itself in or on a non-magnetic particle. This particle becomes one magnetic contaminant and is picked up by the magnetic filter.

What are the benefits over paper or stainless filters?
  • Magnetic filter technology filters oil to a sub-micron level (less than 1 micron). Traditional paper options filter roughly 15 microns or more. Stainless options filter roughly 30 microns or more.
  • No flow restriction and high carrying capacity. Traditional filters create a back pressure which increases with particulate loading.
  • Easy to clean and re-usable. With a minimum 15 year life span and de-magnetized tip, this magnetic filter is faster and easier to clean than your air filter, while out lasting your bike.
  • See what’s on your filter. It’s easy to see how much material collects on the magnetic filter. This can also be an early indicator of pre-mature engine or other component failure.
  • Extends oil life. In most cases engine oil only gets dirty (contaminated) due to particulate wear matter created by the engine. By improving filtration, you keep the oil clean and able to lubricate the engine properly with less wear.

One Eye Industries magnetic filter elements capture contamination from rotating fluids, this includes both ferrous and non-ferrous particles. It is well known that ferrous materials are attracted by magnetic forces; however, the capture of non-ferrous particles by magnetic forces is less understood.

Non-ferrous particles are magnetically captured due to cross-contamination with ferrous particles. All particulate contamination becomes electrostatically charged due to physical interactions with other particles and surfaces. This electrostatic charge causes negatively and positively charged ferrous particles to adhere to positively and negatively charged non-ferrous particles. The ferrous particle in this particle pair is then drawn to the magnetic filter element.

There are other forms of adhesion that also cause the pairing of ferrous and non-ferrous particles, including embedding and capillary forces, although static pairing is the largest contributor to this process.


How electro-static charge is induced

Electrostatic charge is generated whenever there is friction between two bodies moving relative to one another. Charge generation occurs on the molecular level at the interface of any two unlike materials, so a static charge will be generated in any moving fluid, with positive or negative charges moving from the fluid onto the bounding surface.

Causes of electrostatic charging:

  • Friction caused by fluids and gases flowing
  • High fluid velocities
  • Passage of fluids or gases through filter elements or other microporous structures
  • Turbulence created by pumping or compression, particularly in centrifugal units
  • Fluid discharging onto the free surface of a storage tank

Contaminants gaining charge

The amount of charge generated by the flow of a fluid or liquid is related to several fluid and filter properties. Charge generation typically strengthens with increasing flow, reducing fluid conductivity, with certain additive packages and with increasing viscosity. Charge accumulation increases with lower fluid conductivity, lower temperatures and higher viscosities.

Q: What’s the first pass filtering efficiency for non-magnetic particles? 

A: The magnetic filter element will remove non-ferrous contamination up to 95+ % as the non-ferrous contamination is cross contaminated with under 1 micron iron and steel particles in engine oil from the refining and transportation process and from break in wear and normal wear of the metal components.

Q: Is this a situation where it will eventually filter everything with enough run time, or it will actually catch 99.xx% of everything the first time through like a paper filter? 
A: We rate our filtration technology from field testing at 95+% efficiency of ferrous and non-ferrous and not lab tests as most paper filter companies do. Please appreciate engine manufacturers for small to large engines do not rate their filters other than saying they are efficient.  In 20 years I have not seen a paper filter with a one pass efficiency rating and most paper filters are only capable of cleaning contamination  20 microns and higher before going into bypass. They cannot use tighter media as it will reduce the flow of oil required to lubricate and keep the temperature in operating range.  Keep in mind the most damaging wear particles iron, steel, silica under 5 microns and down to and below 1 micron in size cause the most wear damage to bearings and other close tolerance components.

Our magnetic filters never go into bypass thereby ensuring constant protection of your investment.  We have tested our magnetic filters after most brand filters in the industrial world and have proven they are not efficient in cleaning wear particles under 5 microns even when the filter manufacturer claims 99.9 efficiency.  All transmissions and engines provide wear contamination hiding places where they stay until they are disrupted by actions of the bike or equipment during operation. This prevents the opportunity to clean all the contamination in the oil in one pass.

Q: I like the idea of an easy to clean cartridge-style solution, but I’ll admit I’m a little skeptical of its ability to shield the cam and crank bearings from non-magnetic debris (oil jets too…). 
A: Our magnetic filters protect the 1 micron tolerance high pressure hydraulic valves, they also protect the fuel injectors on 30,000 PSI diesel systems. Proven history of extending oil life and equipment component life on mobile and plant rotating equipment for the past 20 years brings a higher value of protection than an unrated paper filter capable of filtering 20 microns and higher with an unknown efficiency.
